Using the Painter Function

The Disto E7400X includes a built-in painter function. This allows the fast calculation of wall and surface areas to aid in calculating how much paint is required for your project.

By using the area function, you can add multiple horizontal distances together, then take a single vertical (height) distance of the walls, to calculate the total area. You can also subtract door and opening areas from your calculations. Areas can be displayed in square feet, square meters.

ISO 16331-1 - Certified Accuracy and Repeatablity

The Disto E7400X by Leica Geosystems is ISO 16331-1, which is a new industry standard developed by an international committee. The range and accuracy of laser distance meters depend greatly on light conditions and how reflective the targeted surface is. Many distance meters can achieve great results in a controlled laboratory environment, but let's face it, most measuring does not take place in the ideal environment.

Leica worked with external experts to help develop and create a standard by which laser distance meters can be tested and compared with each other.

So, what does all of that mean?
Laser distance meters, like the Disto E7400x that are in accordance with ISO 16331-1 can ensure that it will perform to the specifications listed in real life working conditions.

How do they test the E7400X to ensure compliance?

Measurement under favorable conditions – conditions which often apply for interior use:
-       Weak ambient light (3 klux)
-       Measuring to white painted wall
-       Room temperature

Measurement under unfavorable conditions – conditions which often apply for exterior use:
-       Bright sunshine (30 klux)
-       Measuring to white painted wall
-       Total operating temperature range

Other measuring conditions can also be specified, for example:
-       Measuring to a defined target plate
-       Measuring to unfavorable measuring points with strong or weak reflective (metal surface or wet concrete)

When you're looking for a laser distance meter that is reliable and will give you repeatable, accurate results, it's hard to argue against an international standard.

IP65 Protected from Water and Shock

The Disto E7400x is protected against water, dust and shock with a IP65 protection class rating.

To obtain an IP65 rating, the case must be tight enough to provide complete protection from dust entering any of the electronic components. It also can sustain water projected by nozzle against the enclosure from any direction without harmful effects after 3 minutes of continuous spraying.

The Leica Disto E7400x housing is made up of reinforced fiberglass and solid rubber. Proven in drop tests from 6ft.

E7400X Tilt Sensor and Smart Horizontal Mode

Thanks to the combination of distance and tilt measurement functions on the Leica Disto E7400x, you can determine vertical or horizontal distances from remote locations precisely - even over obstructions. This is achieved using the 360° tilt sensor. If obstructions prevent you from taking a direct measurement, you can use the Smart Horizontal Mode to determine a horizontal distance.

On the E7400X, simply press the Smart Horizontal Mode key. Aim the laser at the target and press the Dist button to take the measurement.

The screen will display the angle, height, and adjusted measurement as if you took it on a level horizontal plane.

The height tracking feature allows you to take a vertical measurement continuously. This function works best on a tripod for better stability.

Press the Smart Horizontal Mode key twice. Aim the laser at the lowest vertical point and press the Dist button to take the measurement. Then move the E7400X vertically to the top of your target. A second measurement is not necessary, as the height tracking is continuously displaying the height based on the vertical angle of the Disto. Pressing the Dist button again will stop the continuous height tracking and display the last measurement.

Overview of the Leica Disto E7400x

The new Disto E7400X is IP65 sealed against dust and water - ready to handle even the most harsh work environments. The accuracy and range of the E7400x is in compliance with ISO 16331-1, which ensures that this laser distance meter performs exactly as described. This industry standard was developed by an international committee and accounts for favorable, unfavorable, and other specified conditions to guarantee repeatable measuring results. The measuring range of the new Disto E7400x is 2in to 265ft with an accuracy of +/- 1/16 of an inch. The integrated 360 degree tilt sensor is accurate to 0.2 degrees and allows functions for height tracking, area, and volume calculations. This also allows it to measure indirect heights and measure over or past obstructions. With all of these features, the E7400X has replaced both the Disto D330 and D210XT models. MSRP of the E7400X is $279.

The Leica Disto E7400x Features:

  • Range: 2in to 265ft (80 meters)
  • Accuracy ± 1.0mm (better than 1/16th in.)
  • 360° Tilt measurement
  • Smart Horizontal Mode (include indirect height)
  • Height tracking
  • Area calculation
  • Volume calculations
  • Robust housing protects from 6ft drop
  • Trianglar Area
  • Pythagoras 2-point and 3-point measurements
  • Stake out function (2 values)
